#KeratinHairTreatment 101 – My Experience with Global Keratin Hair Taming System with Step by Step Pictorial, Before & After Pictures

Keratin treatments are still the range in the hair care industry. There are so many myths and undisclosed truths that surround it even today, not to forget the fat pricing for getting one done!

My hair was going through a bad phase and I was naturally piqued to try keratin treatment to prevent it from further damage. During one of my regular salon visits, I enquired about it in detail before opting for one!
What is it? What is in it for me? Is it safe? Does it suit thinning hair? How much of maintenance is required?
I had all of the above questions and more, that popped in my mind and I am going to talk about them in detail in this post and others lined up in the “Keratin Hair Treatment 101” series to help people out there.

Warning – Lengthy post, with not-so-great salon pics!

I have black, naturally straight hair with an oily scalp. Hairfall has been a constant issue in the past year with very hectic work life and travel.

With my sinus issues, I cannot skip blow drying after every wash. In spite of using heat protectant sprays and hair serums, my hair was getting frizzy after each wash and dry at the ends.

Technically I was left with an oily scalp and dry hair/ends – making it tough for any haircare product to cater to both needs.

I don’t straighten/curl/perm my hair nor color them and prefer their natural look (I have colored my hair only once back in January 2016).

I introduced a set of new products in my hair care regime – both for volume and some TLC, some of them which worked great and some I am yet to see results. I had to stop using them, since I underwent the keratin treatment, but I shall update my thoughts on them over the past 3 months experience, one by one on the blog.

I initially wanted to get the L’oreal Pro-Fiber treatment done, since I had read many good reviews about its results and products. After a good discussion at the salon with my hair stylist, I opted for Keratin treatment to nourish the hair and seal damage, per his suggestion.

After my due diligence, trying to understand the pros and cons of undergoing this treatment as much as possible, I finally gave in. Also an ongoing offer at the salon for Keratin treatment has a huge hand in this decision!
Being desperate to fix anything to prevent my hair trending as the witch’s broom, I didn’t mind the dent it caused to my pocket. (probably the highest amount I have ever spent on my hair in one sitting!).

Yes, Keratin treatments don’t come for less. It varies hugely depending on the brand of  keratin treatment being used, salon reputation, your city, length and volume of your hair, etc.

In Hyderabad, it might cost you anywhere between 8000 – 12000 based on above factors. In the US, it ranges from $250 – $400.

What GK claims –

“GKhair is the first and only company to harness the beauty benefits of Juvexin. Derived from sheep wool through an environmentally-friendly process, Juvexin is delivered to the hair in its natural state. The GKhair Hair Taming System with Juvexin restores hair by repairing and providing long-term conditioning and protection. Juvexin is GKhair’s foundation in creating manageable, frizz-free, beautiful looking hair for all those who want it.”

If you are into cruelty-free products, you are still good to go with this treatment, but I am afraid its not the case with vegans.
What is Juvexin –
(From GK Hair’s website)

“Juvexin is a keratin anti-aging protein blend. The most revolutionary development in hair care in the past 50 years. It started with keratin, and then evolved to Juvexin. GKhair is the first and only company to harness the beauty benefits of Juvexin, which is delivered to the hair in its natural state. Derived from pristine sheep wool through an environmentally friendly process, Juvexin is found in GKhair Products worldwide.”

Juvexin is patented by GK Hair and is present in all its (award-winning) products and suitable for all hair types.
Adding to it –
Most Keratin treatments available in the market use hydrolized proteins (protein that is broken down to its component amino acids), whereas GK Hair Taming System uses synthesized, intact keratin consisting both small and large molecules.
While the smaller molecules of Juvexin gets into the hair’s cortex layer to improve hair strength inside out, the larger molecules coat the outer layer of the hair making it look healthy, shiny and also helps with protection from UV and pollution from some extent.
Trivia – Hair is made of three layers, innermost medulla, middle (thicker) cortex and outer cuticle.
This is how my hair looked pre-treatment –

The hair stylist first shampooed my hair twice and cleansed out all dirt and oil with the Moisturizing Shampoo from the GK Hair Taming System range of products. No conditioning & just towel dried hair!

The stylist then applied the keratin treatment product, something of a paste consistency on to my hair partitions. I was asked to close my eyes when he was applying the product close to hair near my forehead and ears, since it has a pungent smell.

The acidic, pungent smell is from formaldehyde, generally found in most keratin treatment products that can cause some eye or nose irritation if inhaled. More on formaldehyde in keratin products in another post!

The product is not applied to the roots and only to the hair strands and then covered with a shower cap or plastic of sorts. This helps the product to penetrate into the hair shaft.

Honestly, my eyes did burn a bit. I have watery eyes that look for a chance to open up and I was literally fighting some tears that day. But nothing unmanageable or unbearable!

I would suggest to ask for some cotton pads dipped in rose water for your eyes, during the keratin leave-on period to handle it better, if you have sensitive eyes or your keratin treatment has formaldehyde.

Step#3 – BLOW DRY

The next step is to blow dry away any excess product from application after about 20-30 minutes (but feels forever!). You can see some fine dust flying around you during blow dry and can smell the pungent fumes caused by formaldehyde too.

This is the final step in the Keratin treatment process. Complete mane is flat ironed in medium heat settings so that keratin penetrates the hair shaft better and is also sealed in for good.

This also helps smoothen the hair and get rid of frizz.

There are some salons/brands that proceed with hair wash as Step# 5 immediately after the flat iron step. But I was asked to come back in 2 days for a post-treatment wash.

After some 2.5 to 3 hrs –

Day 0 – Hair looks sleek, straight and healthy. Has a good sheen to it, soft to feel and easily manageable.

Day 2 – My oily scalp was in full production mode. So it looked quite flat on top of my head, but the mane was good – No frizz or dryness.

Day 3 – Hair wash day! I was back at the salon, where I had a post-treatment wash with GK range of products again. It is recommended to use their hair care products that contain juvexin post treatment and I obliged! Just picked the shampoo and conditioner.

Day 7 – I was down two hair washes post treatment and my hair looked and felt great. I loved how manageable it has become and more classy.

Day 30 – With each wash, the hair looks less straight and looks a little more voluminous than before, which I personally prefer with my thinning hair. Its been a month now and I see great reduction in hairfall, hair is not as brittle as before and frizz-free too.

I don’t need to use a lot of products now to maintain my hair – to keep it frizz-free & non-drying. I can simply walk out of the shower, blow dry and head out without having to bother about bad hair days anymore!

Overall, I am completely happy with the results from my keratin treatment and hope the effects stay put as much as possible (~ 6 months atleast, varies for each)

Shall do my current hair care regime post treatment as well in a different post, as this one is getting lengthier than I thought!
