Day Trip to Galveston | Weekend Getaway from Houston, TX

We planned an impromptu trip to the island city of Galveston, Texas on a sunny yet windy weekend!

We first hit Houston Downtown – enjoyed the skyline and the beautiful buildings lining it, before hitting the freeway to Galveston.

Sharing my Houston Downtown pictures in another post. This one is dedicated to Galveston 🙂

Galveston is an island city, a natural port and a great vacation spot off Houston. Its just 51 miles (~ 82 kms) from Houston and makes up for a great weekend getaway!

The city is famous for Moody Gardens and its Pleasure Pier extending into the sea.

Besides being one of the largest ports in the US, it also boasts of a number of European style architectural monuments that are a treat to the eyes!

We spent most of our day walking through the streets lined with thrift stores and vintage cars parked on both the sides.

Later we opted for a ferry ride from the deck that took us through the harbor showing oil rigs, old navy ships docked aside, US coast guard in action and dolphin spotting!

We drove to the beach when it was time for sunset and soaked in all the beauty of the setting sun behind the cloudy skies with the Pleasure Pier in the backdrop. The ice-cold water and chilly winds made it all worthwhile!

We partied all night and lazed around the beach next day as well while hunting down some proper vegetarian food.

On our way back the next evening, we hit the Keema Boardwalk for some theme park fun. Sadly their roller coaster was under maintenance. But we still managed to get that adrenaline rush with other rides.

Take a look at Galveston from my lens…

How to reach: Drive from Houston

Accommodation: Galveston has a lot of budget and luxury hotels to offer at a price that suits your pocket. We had booked ourselves into Double Tree by Hilton which is on the main road facing the beach with amazing rooms with a view starting from only $150. The shack that you see is a bar-cum-restaurant which has some decent food to offer.

If you are in Texas or visiting any one in Texas, that too Houston – don’t miss out on visiting Galveston for a memorable trip over the weekend! 🙂
